Diego Urieta Jiménez Diego Urieta at 30 years of age is the youngest councillor in the history of the municipality of Manilva. He is single with a partner and his specialist area is Physical Education. Diego is responsible for the Youth; Sport; Beaches and Coast; Education; and Representation of Educational Institutions departments of the town council of Manilva.
Youth (Juventud) Creation of educational workshops and a group of professionals to guide young people and to prioritise their integration into the labour market. Application of specific programs for personal development and formation. Sport (Deportes) To extend educational and existing sporting activities. To improve facilities and create new infrastructures. To see through to completion the Sabinillas sports complex and to construct a racquets sports centre in El Duque. Education The Education Department envisages enhancing the development and quality of education together with AMPA (Parents Assoc.), teachers and pupils. The aim is also to increase the level of education resources provided by the Town Hall that can be achieved through agreements. Councillor Diego Urieta’s immediate plans are to open the nursery in Castillo, increase the number of places in Sabinillas, and to enlarge the instituto (secondary school) Las Viñas. Beaches (Playas) The Manilva coastline, with it 8 kilometres of beaches, is one of our most valuable tourist assets. The new government team, Urieta at its head, will base its work around the cleaning and maintenance of the coast throughout the year. At this time of year to ensure that the lifeguards are well organised. To maintain the municipality's blue flag status and to increase the number of beaches awarded flags. Besides continuing his role as a local doctor, he also heads up the departments of Planning; Environment; Media; and Health.
Planning (Urbanismo) The councillor aims to restore normality to municipal planning, to review the revised PGOU general plan, to make a study of the approval and legalisation of rural constructions up until this year. Also to push for a more sustainable level of development, with more green zones and public areas. Environment (Medio Ambiente) To secure Manilva’s environment, to protect it and to foster a public awareness of its importance and to encourage them to protect it through recycling and other initiatives. Media (Medios de Comunicación) To restore democratic control to the local media, with freedom of expression, and providing a public service with three clear objectives: to inform, to entertain, and to offer cultural programming. Health (Salud) A complete restructuring of the local health and emergency services. To collaborate more closely with the regional health authorities to increase the provision of health services, ensuring that the people of Manilva are safe, well cared for and with sufficient resources to deal with any situation or problem. Paqui López Rodríguez 41 year old Paqui lives in Sabinillas and she is married with two children. Her political career goes back to the previous elections, in which she was also elected as a councillor. Her areas of responsibility are: Fiestas; Municipal School of Dance; Women; and Social Welfare and Equality.
Fiestas One of the main objectives of this department is to maintain the traditions of the municipality, with the accent on activities that are relevant to and include all the people of the municipality. These celebrations are for and by the people of the town who should identify and with and be the main participants in these events. Social Welfare (Bienestar Social) Paqui wishes to introduces measures to help people from all sections of the community to realise their full potential and to have access to all the services and facilities available. For the elderly; the needy; those dependent on drugs and alcohol; those in detox programmes; young people in relationships, etc. The department is a focal point for all those who need assistance. Women (Área de la Mujer) The important role of women in society is now well recognised, and the role of this department is to help to reinforce their position in society, to help them to progress, and to counter all forms of gender discrimination. To develop work for housewives, and provide careers advice for young women entering the job market, are just some of the department’s services proposed by the Councillor. Antonio de Haro Fernández Married and the father of three children, Antonio is a retailer based in Sabinillas and has been involved in Manilva’s political scene for the last two decades. In this current administration he has responsibility for Manilva’s fleet of vehicles; waste disposal; agriculture and fisheries.
Rubbish and Street Cleaning (Residuos y Limpieza Viaria) “A clean Manilva” is the motto around which this department will carry out its duties. To achieve this more of the cleaning processes will be mechanised, and attention will be paid those areas outside the main centres which have, up until now, been neglected. Agriculture This department’s priority will be to improve the roads and access to rural properties. Fisheries (Pesca) As a former fisherman, Antonio has a unique awareness of the requirements of this section of the community and will look to improve their warehousing, docks, and other related facilities, not only that they can be more productive, but so that those families engaged in this industry can continue to make a living from it. Mario Jimenez Rodríguez 37 year old Mario Jiménez is married with two children. He entered local politics in 1998 as an active member of the Izquierda Unida and has stood in the last two elections. He has been delegated to Parks & Gardens; Infrastructure & Public Works; Sanitation; and Provincial Planning.
Parks and Gardens (Parques y Jardines) Mario Jiménez has stated that this department is charged with not only maintaining in good condition the municipalities existing parks and gardens, but to advance the five new park projects currently planned for Manilva’s visitors and residents. Infrastructure and Public Works This department is responsible for continued development of the infrastructure to keep pace with a growing population, which is vital to maintain and improve the standard of living in the municipality. Provincial Planning This department is responsible for liaising with the various departments with the provincial government in Malaga, to ensure that the people of Manilva can benefit from the many subsidies, grants, improvements, educative courses, cultural and sporting activities that are available. Augusto Gil Prieto 35 year old bar owner Augusto Gil is married and the father of two children. He has been involved in politics for 18 years, and has been on the ASM’s electoral list for the last two elections. His concerns as a resident and his professional knowledge has made him the ideal choice as councillor for Tourism; Promotion & Image; Commerce; Relations with Marina del Mediterráneo S.A.; and Pymes (Small & Medium Sized Businesses).
Tourism and Promotion Augusto Gil’s objective is that Manilva’s tourism and promotion projects are centred locally and don’t merely rely on representation and national and international tourism fairs. Not to say that Manilva will not participate in these fairs, but that Manilva will have more control over the direction, quality, balance and variety of its tourism. Commerce Local companies should work closely with the local authorities to create a business climate in which all parties may prosper. August Gil intends to create closer links with business and to hold regular meetings at which they may express their hopes and concerns. Relations with Marina del Mediterráneo S.A. Marina del Mediterráneo S.A. is the company which manages the Port of Duquesa, an important part of the municipality. Augusto Gil is conscious of the value of good relations between the Town Hall and this company, so as to maintain complete awareness of all matters concerning the Port. Pymes (Small and Medium Businesses) One of the councillor’s chief concerns is to assist and protect Manilva’s small and medium sized businesses. In most major commercial centres, these companies are underrepresented. He considers it important to help them not only maintain, but to increase their business, and also to encourage new businesses to the area. Diego Díaz Jiménez A financial advisor, 53 years old and married with three children, Diego entered politics in later life, due to his concerns about the current situation. Diego has been put in charge of Human Resources; Economy and Finance; Public Participation; Foreigners; Water; and Personnel and Employment Promotion.
Economy and Finance The objective is to produce a balanced budget with good financial planning and transparent accounts. Public Participation Ensuring that all sections of the community are fully catered for in the budget, and that the municipality’s activities are open to participation by all its citizens. Foreigners Through this department the councillor aims to provide all the necessary resources and assistance to ensure that all Manilva’s foreign residents feel at home, and are integrated into the community. Cultural events and other activities will be organised to this end, and meetings will be held with representatives of the foreign community. The department will also continue to run Spanish courses for foreigners. Water To maintain and improve the quality of the water supply to all sections of the municipality. Personnel and Employment Promotion To champion the cause of equal rights and opportunities for all Manilva’s employees and to maintain contact with the Comité de Empresa. The department also seeks to optimise the council’s resources and to improve the quality of service provided to the public, and to provide a constant programme of short courses and education for employees. To promote a local business environment which provides a competitive and professional service to the public. Yolanda Holgado Pineda 34 year old Yolanda lives in Manilva, is married and the mot-her of two children. She is responsible for the Culture; Municipal School of Music; Carnivals and Choirs; and Consumer departments.
Culture Yolanda considers that Culture is the basis of society and is preparing a programme of projects that will continue to improve the quality of life. These include access to existing academic programmes available through the Manilva Town Halls partnership with various universities, academies and other bodies, even enabling university access for Manilva's older citizens. The department aims to support, guide and counsel anyone who wants to advance their cultural objectives, whatever their age. On the other hand there are a wide range of cultural activities and events planned, including theatre performances, exhibitions, cinema screenings and conferences and lectures. Municipal School of Music Music has an important place locally, and Manilva is quickly gaining a reputation for itself, mainly due to the Municipal School of Music, its master, Fernando Antiñolo, and all the pupils, who are well regarded throughout the Province. The department's objective is to continue to support this cultural initiative, to provide enjoyment through public concerts, and also to allow the young people the chance to realise their potential in the world of music. Consumer The Municipal Consumers Office's role is to work closely with the public, and to use its powers and resources to protect the interests of consumers. It also issues information advising and warning the public about possible frauds and scams, and offers advice on the best deals, etc.
