The Sports and Beaches Departments create a ‘Nautical Zone' in Sabinillas

The Councillor for Youth and Sports, Rafael Mena, in collaboration with Manilva's Beach Department, headed up by Manuel Ramos, has announced the formation of a dedicated nautical zone in Sabinillas, which during the months of August and September will offering a wide range of nautical activities and education to both residents and visitors alike.

This nautical zone will occupy an area of the La Noria beach in Sabinillas of approximately 100 linear metres, with approach from the sea by a 20 metre wide channel marked by buoys, exclusively for use by those participating in the nautical centre's activities.

There will also be two beach huts available for office use, storage of equipment, and which will provide toilet and cleaning facilities.

The running of nautical centre will be entrusted to professional instructors who have many years experience in training young people in the various skills of sailing and other nautical activities, and have been offering similar course in the Port of Sotogrande .

According to the Youth and Sports department, these course will be offered free of charge to local children between the ages of 10 and 16 and will count towards certification by the Andalucia Sailing Federation.

The courses will be of four weeks duration and there will be three courses a week. Courses are 20 euros per person and applications are available at the Edificio Usos Multiples in Sabinillas or at the Youth and Sports Department at the top of Calle Mar in Manilva.

Councillor Rafael Mena would also like to thank the President of the Manilva Nautical Club, Antonio Lopez, for his enthusiastic support in launching this new and exciting initiative.

According to the Councillor for Sport it is important that the young people of Manilva will be able to renew their maritime traditions in boat handling and that it provides yet another source of enjoyment, social activity and understanding of the area in which we live. The Mayor, Salvador Zotano, also congratulated the initiative which will provide an unforgettable summer experience for many young people.

The Mayor went on to declare that these activities should not be restricted to the minority and restricted by economic factors and the Town Council is dedicated to making these facilities available to all those youngsters who wish to participate free of charge.

Future plans are for more collaboration between the Youth and Sports Department and the Nautical Centre to stage other events and offer more courses.

The Nautical Zone will initially be equipped with 5 ‘Optimist' sailing dinghies, four kayaks and a unit known as a ‘Galleon'.
