The Mayor of Manilva, Salvador Zotano, has constituted a working party to address the needs of the taxi service in Manilva and to solve the problems that have arisen in this sector of the Manilva's public transport system.
This working party will consist of two taxi license holders, two representatives of employee drivers, the secretary of the municipal corporation, along with the Mayor and Councillor for Local Tax and Revenue, Carlos Gomez.
One of the first acts carried out by this body was to issue an extra two licenses, which brings the total to thirteen.
On the table for the first meeting of the taxi working party were four main topics for discussion:
- The initiation of a GPS system which will instantly communicate to the driver the call and address of customers requiring taxis. The council has suggested that this expensive new technology could be funded through commercial sponsorship in exchange for advertising on the taxis.
- Another matter under discussion was the extending of the taxi rank in Sabinillas and its refurbishment.
- An important point under the discussion was the need for the police to come down hard on illegal taxi services which are damaging the livelihood of licensed taxi drivers.
- Finally, the possibility of adding new, designated, taxi pick-up points was discussed. The Mayor indicated that he hoped to have some proposals prepared for the next meeting of the taxi working party and that he has asked the Corporation secretary to study the options.
The Mayor has proposed that this system of negotiation and problem solving can be applied to other industries and areas, to address the concerns, requests and suggestions of the citizens of Manilva.
