New Boats to Clear Rubbish at Sea

Four new boats have been purchased by the Mancommunicad de Municipios of the Western Costa del Sol, the association of eleven municipalities which includes Manilva.

The purpose of these boats is to clear away rubbish, scum and seaweed from the sea.

They will work along the whole stretch of coast between Torremolinos and Manilva, and it is hoped that they will also be able to deal with the huge numbers of jellyfish that have been causing a nuisance for swimmers.

Hundreds of swimmers have been stung by jellyfish this year, although fortunately the cold Atlantic current that we experience at this end of the Costa has meant that the problem hasn't been to serious in Manilva, although swimming has had to be banned on a couple of occasions, particularly when the prevailing Easterly wind has brought them inshore.

The four new cleaning vessels have been purchased at a cost of 143,000 euros.
