26.08.04 IMPROVEMENTS
TO LAS VIÑAS FOOTBALL GROUND
Work is progressing well to replace the grass pitch at Las Viñas
football ground in Manilva with a state-of-the-art artificial
grass, all-weather playing surface. The pitch is being installed
by specialists with the materials being supplied by a Dutch company.
The playing area is being extended to 65 x 95 m. There are also
improvements being made to the changing facilities.
Works are expected to cost just under 420,000 euros, and will
mean a reduction in the high maintenance costs which are a feature
of grass pitches in southern Spain.
09.08.04 SUPPLEMENTARY
ELECTRICITY SUPPLY
There have been several cases just recently in Andalucia where
the increase in demand for electricity, as a result of the numbers
of visitors and the proliferation of air-conditioning units, have
resulted in power cuts. With this in mind Manilva has had installed
two sets of auxillary generating units to cope with the demand.
One of these units is in Duquesa and another is at the new fairground
- last year the feria was plunged into darkness for 5 hours on
its opening night.
21.07.04 SUNDAY
MARKET TO MOVE
After several weeks of rumour and conjecture, I managed to get
the official line on the Sunday market move. Speaking to Salvador
Zotano, the councillor in charge of the consumers' office, last
night at the Duquesa tourist office inauguration, he told me that
the Sunday market will indeed be moving to the new recinto ferial
(fairground) on the Rio Manilva road. The move will take place
either the first or second Sunday in September. This will enable
works to get underway to improve the old fairground area, which
will include the extending of the Paseo Maritimo and ultimately
a bridge over the Rio Manilva.
21.07.04 DUQUESA
TOURIST OFFICE OPENS
The new tourist office in Puerto de la Duquesa will open its doors
to the public on Tuesday 27th (Monday is a bank holiday). Opening
hours are: Mondays 0900 to 1400h; Tuesday to Friday 0900 to 1400h,
1700 to 1900h; Saturday and Sunday 1100 to 1300h. The girls in
the office are equipped to deal with enquiries in English, German,
Italian, French and of course Spanish.
09.07.04 EXTRA
PARKING FOR SABINILLAS
Work is currently underway to strip the turf from the Campo de
Football in Sabinillas prior to its conversion to an overspill
car park for up to 300 vehicles. This is a temporary measure as
next year work will commence on the new sports complex to be built
on this site. See News 3
02.07.04 LOCAL
FIRM DONATES DEFIBRILLATOR
An unfortunate occurence in May led to a local business donating
a Defibrillation unit to the local Cruz Roja (Red Cross) station
at Castillo. A gentleman on holiday suffered a heart attack in
the Port of Duquesa and two lads dashed to the Cruz Roja station
to summon help, but unfortunately they were out attending an accident.
The proprietors of Duquesa Estates, whose offices are opposite
the Cruz Roja's, and who are former UK fire officers rushed to
the Port to give assistance. Despite their repeated attempts at
resuscitation, too much time had elapsed, and sadly the gentleman
did not regain consciousness. This sad incident led the Duquesa
Estates staff to purchase and donate a complete resuscitation
unit and training package, which will help prevent such a thing
happening again.
02.07.04 FIRE
RISK
The recent spell of hot weather and the seasonal dry spell has
brought us round to the annual bush fire season. It cannot be
over-stressed just how easy it is for a moment's carelessness
to result in massive conflagrations and damage to property and
the environment. Smokers should be careful how they dispose of
'dog-ends', if picnicking in the campo, barbecues should only
be lit in designated areas, glass objects should be disposed of
correctly and even parking in long grass should be avoided as
hot exhausts or brakes have been known to set off fires.
03.07.04 EXPO
VERANO 2004
As part of the Manilva Summer of Culture a daily 'arts and crafts'
market will be held on the Paseo de Maritimo in Sabinillas. Although
scheduled to start 2nd July not all stallholders have set up their
wares yet but the next few days should see it in full flow. With
items from all over the world this will add even more colour to
the seafront in Sabinillas.
At the same time there are various activities for children of
all ages including a toddler park, beach volleyball, football,
basketball, bouncy castles and numerous other activities.
For more information see 'Summer of Culture' in the Ferias and
Fiestas' section.
