Restoration work has begun on the rooms in the Castle in Castillo de la Duquesa which are destined to house the new Archaeological Museum.
These works are being funded by grants obtained from the Junta de Andalucia’s Museums Department which has included the project in the Andalucia Museum Network. The works, which include restoration of the brickwork, floors, and windows (including the installation of unintrusive security systems), are being carried out by specialist contractors who have been involved in such projects as Malaga’s Roman Theatre, and it is expected for works to be completed in approximately two months. Once these works are completed the display infrastructure and exhibits will be installed including audiovisual equipment, explanation panels, scale models, and reconstructions, etc. The main theme of the museum will be Manilva’s Roman heritage, particularly relating to the remains in the immediate vicinity of the Castle, including the bathhouse, villa, fish procession factory and burial ground. It is also hoped to expand the museum soon to include exhibits from the Bronze Age hill fort at Los Castillejos de Alcorrín and some of the municipality’s medieval remains, thus representing a complete history of the area. |
