Councillors from Manilva's PP and PSOE opposition parties, staged a protest preventing the demolition of what is considered as one of Manilva's important historic buildings.
The action occurred on the morning of Thursday, 2nd October, when opposition councillors were alerted by locals that machinery was in place to commence the demolition of the building known as "Casa de los Torres" considered one of Manilva's three emblematic buildings, along with the Iglesia de Santa Ana church, and the Castle in Castillo de la Duquesa. As a result of this action, and the strong feelings of some local residents who had called on Francisco Lopez, the Provincial Cultural Delegate, to put a stop to the works, Manilva's governing body has put on hold the demolition of the Casa de los Torres, pending a study as to the possible retention of the building's facade and its incorporation into the new wine and viticulture museum and study centre. Whilst Francisco Lopez has declared that the building is not currently registered as a protected building, opposition councillors have stated that it does feature as such on the new PGOU planning document that is yet to be ratified. The building was bought from its owners in 2003 for 360.000 euros with the view of creating a cultural centre, wine and viticulture museum and a base for the local Flamenco society (peña). |
