The Mayoress of Manilva with local councillors and representatives of the Manilva Suns
Manilva Town Council recently signed a deal to sponsor the Costa del Sol Suns, an amateur American Football team based in the Marbella/San Pedro area and comprising experienced players from leagues in England, Finland, Sweden, Austria, and American NCAA including Zac Colvin, former quarterback with the Colorado Buffaloes.
In a ceremony at the end of August, the Mayoress of Manilva, Antonia Muñoz, and the councillor for Youth and Sport, Diego Urieta, met with various members of the team to finalise the agreement. The team will play under the name of ‘Manilva Suns’ and will represent Manilva in all the competitions in which they participate, as well as in all forms of communcition and will display the “Manilva” brand, wherever possible. The agreement also aims to spread the sport locally, to collaborate in sporting events and to provide access to municipal facilties for the team. Manilva has granted 1200 euros to provide equipment for the team. In the future the Town Hall plans to organise an American Football club to develop this sport locally and provide yet another activity for local youngsters to compete, aside from those that already exist. The Manilva Suns currently compete in the Andalucian League until December this year, but from January, 2008 they will participate in the Spanish National League, thus promoting the name of Manilva on a national stage. Councillor Urieta stated that “this is the first of a number of agreements and collaborations being prepared with other authorities and sporting associations, with the single objective of developing sporting activities such as football, basketball, handball and indoor football amongst others.
