At midday, Sunday, November 18th, in excellent conditions and a moderate crowd the second round of the Andalucian League saw the Manilva Suns take on the Granada Sarracenos at the Estadio de Las Viñas de Manilva. The final result saw a resounding victory, 66 – 0 , in favour of the home team Manilva Suns. The home team outscored their opponents in each of the quarters: 22-0, 20-0, 8–0 and 16-0. (The second half was shortened by mutual agreement for various reasons). The Suns left little option available to the visiting Granada team as they dominated the game both in offense and defense. Once again the Suns’ passing attack, lead by American Zac Colvin and Austrian Rene Knopf, proved unstoppable. Colvin connected with Knopf for 3 touchdowns, threw a fourth to Spaniard Juan Ortiz. The Suns offense proved equally unstoppable on the run, Colvin adding 2 spectacular rushing touchdowns, further complemented by the bruising runs of Jose Toquero (2 touchdowns) and the breathtaking speed of Spaniard Ivo Gonzalez (2 touchdowns). The Suns defense maintained the tempo with another crushing performance, containing the Sarracens’ attack and limiting them to only minor gains through the brave and gutsy play of their two young quarterbacks (both members of the San Pedro Centurions club) . The Suns defense, led by Britons Trevor Spence & Kevin Prior and Irishman Justin Barber once again demonstrated their intensity in a series of bruising hits and tackles, causing 8 Granada turnovers. The play of the defensive leaders was ably supported by the rapidly improving Spanish national players, led by Sergio Sanz, Manuel Carmona and Juan Jose Villaba. Head Coach Jiri Jurvannen stated “We are pleased to see the increasing fusion between our experienced players and our first year players both Spanish and foreign. The work ethic in the team is outstanding, as is the desire to learn more of this game”. The Suns now head to the final game of the Andalucian League’s regular season and face the Granada Lions, in Granada. Victory will guarantee the Suns a place in the Final of what is their first year of competition in the Andalucian League. For more information: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
