A small group of friends in Duquesa who enjoy singing were disappointed to find that there was no English-singing choir in the area so they decided to form one. From this the ParaSol Singers was established. In a short time membership has grown to over 20 but, with most people having family or holiday breaks, we are always looking for new members to maintain a core group. The ability to ‘hold a tune’ is more important than experience or technical ability and age is no barrier! We sing mostly pop and rock songs but anything “from Gershwin to GaGa” is fine if the group and our Musical Director like the number.
Singing is a great way to relax as well as to meet people and the satisfaction or the “buzz” that you get from participating in and contributing to a great choral sound is tremendous. But we are not just there for ourselves, we want to give something to the community. It has been proven that singing with other people, or even just listening to a choir or singing group, has therapeutic value and makes people just feel happier.
We are very fortunate to have Marion Allen as our Musical Director, who has experience of working with both amateur dramatics and musical productions both in the UK and on the Costa, and who has the rare knack of being able to mould a group like ours, who have lots of enthusiasm but very different levels of experience of individual or group singing, into a melodious sound! We rehearse at a venue between Sabinillas and Estepona on Wednesday evenings. Why not give it a try – men especially – If you are interested in joining or coming to hear us, please email email@example.com or call Mike on 692 558 041.
The Music from the Movies and Musical charity concert proved a great success with over 1200 euros being raised for the The Duquesa Charitable Society of St George.
Organised by Tony and Hev Gates from Fathoms, and held at Meson El Molino in Sabinillas, an audience of almost 100 local residents enjoyed a great night with music provided by Antony Wolfson, Mandy L, Frank Skott, Danielle Caballero, and the KP Band, all who gave their time and talent free of charge.
The funds were swelled by the auction of a poster depicting the performers which was drawn and donated by Duquesa’s artist in residence, Eddie Wall, which was successfully bid for by David Harmston from the Nyland Knight Foundation, along with the raffle of a Jamon kindly donated by Meson El Molino.
This is the first of a packed programme of events planned by the charity for the coming months.

On Friday 27th September, from 11 am, there will be a coffee morning in Plaza Los Naranjos in support of the Macmillan event. Last year, we raised over 1,500 euros, with the proceeds split 50:50 between Macmillan and Cudeca. We do hope that you will be able to join us and support these very worthwhile causes.
There will be delicious cakes, a raffle with some superb prizes, a tombola, and stalls with books, cards, marmalade and chutney, and nearly new clothes.
If you are able to help by making a cake, or running the stalls, please contact Hilary Warren on 634 619 673 or Kath Robinson on 678 050 832. All contributions will be very much appreciated.
Anyone looking for an alternative to the normal entertainment on offer this summer, should look no further than Castillo de la Duquesa where on Saturday 24th August from 7pm the castle will play host to an auction of celebrity memorabilia as part of an event organized in collaboration with the Manilva Foreign Residents Department, to raise much needed funds for two local charities.
Animal in Need will use their share of the funds to boost their neutering program which helps prevent some of the many unwanted litters that often end up as strays on the street. They will also put money towards much needed durable dog houses, so the animals have shelter for the winter.
Meanwhile The Duquesa Charitable Society of St George who will use their share of funds to boost their project of supplying food parcels to local families currently struggling to make ends meet during the present “crisis”.
The auction itself will be hosted by well known local radio presenter Sid Olivera and will feature items donated by such celebrities such as Anita Dobson, Mark Knopfler, Shane Warne and Simon Cowell and even Boris Johnson!
But it is more than just an auction and there will also be live entertainment, food and drink on offer. The evening’s entertainment will be headlined by singer Antony Wolfson and The Art Club Band and it is hoped that other local acts will come along and give impromptu performances.
Entry to the event is just €20 per person and apart from the entertainment ticket holders will also receive a raciòn of paella plus a welcome drink and canapés.
Tickets are just €20 each and can be bought at The Bookshop or Fathoms Bar in Sabinillas.
Further details of the event and the auction items can be found at www.aincharityauction.webs.com.
Tickets were sold out well in advance for ADANA´s Moroccan Night, the Estepona-based animal rescue charity’s annual summer party, this year held at John and Henry´s Restaurant Cortijo La Vizcaronda in Manilva.
Eighty two guests, many in exotic Moroccan costumes, wined and dined in the beautiful gardens while Irish singer Mandy Lovett and husband Gerry entertained them with old time favourites. Everyone agreed that the Moroccan buffet, featuring various tagines prepared by Henry, was delicious.
Along with the Moroccan cookies came the stunning belly dancer, Sashzade whose graceful performance had everyone entranced.
The evening ended with everyone dancing to yet more lively music and songs by Mandy.
The night raised a grand 1,544€ for ADANA. ADANA wishes to thank John and Henry for all the work they put into the party to make the evening a success, to Mandy and Gerry for entertaining free of charge, and to our energetic barladies Trish and Carol.
The Ferrari Owners Club of Andalucia will be holding their third annual visit to Puerto de la Duquesa this Sunday, June 23 at around 1.30 pm.
In past years they have driven in procession around the municipality, but it is not clear whether they will be doing so this year.
There will certainly be a large number of Ferraris of all models on display around the port whilst the club members enjoy lunch at the Port’s Il Capitano Restaurant.
