Have your say in the coming elections

The Resident newspaper invites local residents in the Manilva and Casares area to attend an informal meeting at the Mayfair Music Club, Plaza Ginebra, Sabinillas on Wednesday 29 October from 6 pm.

This is the first of a number of informal meetings over the coming months in various venues in Manilva, Casares and Estepona to gauge the mood of the foreign residents and to find out their concerns and aspirations so that we can communicate these to the local politicians both in government and in opposition so that these concerns can be addressed in their forthcoming manifestos in the lead up to the forthcoming local elections in May 2015.

Some of the areas we are particularly keen to find out your opinions on are:

  • Security
  • Cleaning
  • Economy, Local Taxes and Business
  • Communication and Transport
  • The Town Hall and Foreign Residents

Please feel free to make any suggestions on concerns and aspirations you would like to see discussed on the night. Send them to produccion@theresident.eu

La Mecedora Hotel and Restaurant

La Mecedora Hotel and Restaurant

Recently opened after a full refurbishment La Mecedora Hotel and Restaurant is situated in Sabinillas just off the N340 opposite the entrance to Pueblo Mexicano.

Formerly Rorys Bar, La Mecedora offers traditional Spanish cuisine, with the emphasis on providing a rustic ambience and a homely atmosphere, which the restuarant’s quirky layout, with its separate rooms and courtyards, is well set up to provide.

La Mecedora offers weekly entertainment on Saturdays with some of the Coast’s most popular artists performing, along with a barbecue menu for the diners.

La Mecedora also caters for private parties and functions, which along with its hotel accommodation, featuring ten rooms, makes it the ideal venue.

Room rates are very reasonable, with high season rates of just 40 euros for a single, and 55 euros a double, and reductions out of season. La Mecedora also has a room especially adapted for disabled visitors.

All in all La Mecedora Hotel and Restaurant is a great addition to the Coast’s gastronomic and tourism infrastructure.

Sweet Atelier, bringing the sweet smell of success to Duquesa Port

Mercedes Bornico

There are a number of smells that evoke a feeling of comfort and well-being, none more so than the smell of freshly baked bread. Often though that promise is not delivered and the anticipation is betrayed by a bland, tasteless lump of cooked dough. Not so at the Sweet Atelier, Duquesa Port’s very own patisserie. This boutique bakery offers a wide range of breads, cakes, pastries, all baked in-house by its award-winning owner, Mercedes Bornico.

According to Mercedes the key to a good product, is sourcing the best ingredients, whether it be the best French flour for the bread, or local produce for some of the sweeter temptations such as the Pear Tartin with Manilva Wine.

30 year-old Canadian Italian Mercedes began her career as a sou chef in London working at the prestigious Thomas Cubitt House in Belgravia, before coming to Spain to pursue a career as a pastry chef.

After studying at the CIOMijas hotel and cookery school she took up an internship at Finca Cortesin during which time she was offered a teaching post at the La Roche Hotel and Catering College which luckily for us she declined to pursue her own career as a pastry chef.

In fact it was whilst out walking her dog that Mercedes realised that one thing Duquesa Port was missing was a bakery and thus Sweet Atelier was founded.

Situated in Calle Poniente (next to the English Butcher) Sweet Atelier offers daily produced breads, cakes and pastries, with a number of speciality breads produced on the weekend, breads such as sour dough, bagels, chorizo, or sun dried tomato. Sweet Atelier are happy to produce breads, cakes and pastries to order for special occasions, parties, etc., and also cater for bars and restaurants.

Mercedes was also proud to point out that very little went to waste, typically products were available the following day with 50% off, and if still not sold, they were donated to a local food bank.

So why not treat yourself ….

Opening hours:
Tuesday – Friday 9 am to 5 pm
Saturday 9.30 am to 3 pm
Sunday 10 am to 3 pm
