Works begin in Sabinillas to install fibre optic network

The communications company Movistar (Telefonica) has begun the installation of the fibre optic network which will bring high speed internet connectivity to domestic users in Sabinillas.

The Mayor of Manilva, Diego José Jiménez, and the councillor for infrastructure and works, Antonio Barragán, recently met with technicians from Movistar to discuss the project and the impact local users. The main advantage is that this technology will enable download speeds of up to 300 meg and upload speeds of up to 30 meg, and will also allow local business to access services on ‘the cloud’ in a more speedy and efficient way.

Installation work is already underway in Sabinillas and requires the replacement of the current network of copper wires with fibre optic cable in every street and building.

Manilva Town and the urbanisations present a more difficult task and works there will begin in early 2016, and represents a considerable investment on the part of the operator.

The Gecko Tour Manilva Open

Gecko Tour

The Gecko Tour to hold the first ever Manilva Open at La Duquesa Golf Club.

La Duquesa Golf Club is quietly hidden away behind the bustling port of Duquesa and being the only golf course in Manilva it was naturally chosen to host the event. This secret gem of a golf course is being bought back to its former glory, when it was once listed in the top 100 courses of the world.

Designed by Robert Trent jones Snr, the course opened in 1989 a good number of years after his earlier designs at Sotogrande, Las Brisas and Valderrama. La Duquesa might not be as highly regarded as the trio of top ranked iconic Spanish layouts, but it still displays a large number of RTJ design traits and spectacular views to entertain its players.

The Gecko Tour and the Manilva Town Council have joined forces to bring a top professional golf tournament to Manilva and hope to make it an annual fixture on the Costa Del Sol sporting calendar. The tournament will be held on 3 – 5th March 2016 and will witness foreign players from across Europe, many with European/Challenge tour credentials, taking on the cream of the Spanish professionals. Duquesa being the home course to local pros like the Canizares Brothers and the Quiros family, the level of competition is going to be as good as you will get on any major tour.

The event will be aired on Canal+ TV (golf Spain), screened four times a week to 600,000 viewers along with Manilva TV and all of The Gecko Tour media partners will be covering the tournament.

Duquesa Golf

The Gecko Tour Manager Calum Mcgregor actually lives in Manilva and is thrilled to have the players come to his home course.

“We are really excited about the event. I live in Manilva and of course working for the Gecko tour I wanted to bring something into my community. I spoke with the Golf course and they loved the idea and then my friend Dean Shelton got elected to the local council and they loved the idea, so we are all really excited to bring all our touring pros and introduce them to Duquesa. I play my golf here with the huge amount of Scandinavian members and they are really excited to be a part of the event. Our tour comprises of about 40% Scandinavian players so I am sure they will all have a great experience.

We have a lot of work to do over the summer to get everything into tournament mode but with everyone’s support I am super confident that we will be ready. I can already picture the locals cheering on the players, it’s going to be an amazing event. The final day is to be played on a Saturday and we are hoping that we will put on a good show for the locals who are golf mad.”

A prize giving ceremony and gala evening will round of the Saturday night and the following day the local residents will have an opportunity to play with the pros. The Gecko Tour will be holding a fun Charity Pro-Am day.

Virgen del Carmen 2015

Virgen del Carmen

Thursday, July 16 is the celebration of the Virgen del Carmen, the Patron Saint of fishermen and sailors.

Tradition has it that the Carmelite monks, who inhabited the slopes of Mount Carmel and worshipped the Virgin Mary who had appeared there in a vision, were forced to flee by a Saracen invasion force. During this eviction the Virgin appeared to them again and promised to be their ‘Star of the Sea’ and to guide them to safety.

Since then she has been the patron saint of mariners and, as such, the Virgen del Carmen is revered amongst the local fishing communities of southern Spain .

Virgen del Carmen is celebrated by the fishing communities in Sabinillas and Castillo. The Virgen del Carmen is Castillo de la Duquesa’s Patron Saint and on her feast day – the 16th July – her images are placed on board the local fishing boats in two separate ceremonies: the first off the beach at Sabinillas amongst much pomp and ceremony (this can be quite a ‘hairy’ operation, especially if the sea is a bit lively); and the second in the Port of Duquesa. The two boats bearing the Virgens, along with with a flotilla of fishing and pleasure craft, then parade up and down the coast from the Salt Tower to Chullera before disembarking in Sabinillas and the marina at Puerto de la Duquesa to be borne back back to her place of honour in the churches at Sabinillas and Castillo respectively.

If the sea is too rough, particularly during strong easterly winds, the Sabinillas ‘Virgen’ will be paraded along the beach rather than taken to sea and the Castillo ‘Virgen’ will remain in Duquesa Port.

Virgen del Carmen Duquesa

Programme 2015

5.00 pm – Ceremony to award the medals to the new members of the Brotherhood.

6.00 pm – A mass will be held at the parrish church in Castillo after which the procession will proceed to Duquesa where the Virgen will be placed on the chosen boat and then paraded up and down the coast accompanied by the rest of the ‘fleet’.

10 pm – Live music in the El Huerto Park next to the Castle until the early hours of the morning.

12 noon – A mass will be held in the ‘Fishermen’s Square’ in Sabinillas, followed by a musical performance by the “Aires de Mar” choir. There will also be a ceremony to crown the Virgen del Carmen Queen and Ladies in Waiting. Later in the afternoon at around 7 pm (ish) the statue of the Virgen will be carried to the beach in Sabinillas where it is placed on a fishing boat.

In the evening there will be entertainment with music and dancing into the early hours of the morning.
