Manilva celebrates its Romeria on June 7 and 8, 2014

Manilva celebrates its 2014 Romería on the weekend of June 7 and 8 organised by Manilva’s Cultural Department and the Cofradía Nuestra Señora de los Dolores y Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno brotherhood.

A Romería is a traditional catholic pilgimage consisting of a procession which makes its way to a religious sanctuary or chapel, in this case the San Adolfo Chapel on the road to the Roman Baths.

As with most Spanish festivals the religious aspect of the event is complemented by a great opportunity to party, with many people camping on the riverside over the weekend, live music available and plenty of food and drink.

The Romería begins on Saturday June 7 at around 7.30 pm with the procession from the Iglesia de Santa Ana church in Manilva to the San Adolfo Chapel.

On Sunday June 9, from 1 pm there will be a Holy Mass accompanied by the Santa Ana choir, followed by music and refreshments with all the proceeds from the bar going towards the restoration of Nuestra Señora del Rosario.

Derby Day Party – Saturday 7 June

Horse Racing

Sally and David Russell are holding their annual Epsom Derby party on Saturday 7th June.  It will start at 1 pm prompt and this year it is in aid of two charities: Animal In Need in La Linea for abandoned dogs and The Mane Chance Sanctuary, based in England, for horses that have been rescued.

Tickets for the party are 10 euros each, the money raised to go to the charities equally. Apart from yourselves, all you need bring is your favourite booze. A hot and cold buffet will be on the menu for both carnivores and vegetarians.

Clothes and jewellery stalls will be on site as will the on-course bookie; there will also be a raffle for some fabulous prizes. At 2 pm the runners will be auctioned and the race winner will collect the prize money raised (last year 230 euros).

New skate park planned for Sabinillas

Following the success of the skate park recently opened in Manilva, the town hall have been in consultation with local skating enthusiasts, and as a result they have announced that a skate park will be opened in Sabinillas shortly.

This new facility will be situated in the green zone in the Maicandil area close to the new cycle path and will feature a Half Pipe, Miniramp, Quarter Pipe, Sping Ramp, Grindbox and Planter, Ground Rail and a Box.

Manilva awarded the distinction of ‘The Manilva Beaches Blue Trail”

The Environment Ministry and the Biodiversity Foundation have awarded Manilva’s coastline the distinction of being a designated ‘Blue Trail’, the first of its kind in the Province of Malaga.

The title ‘Blue Trail’ is given to routes that link Blue Flag beaches and ports and contributes to the sustainable use of the coastline, and recognises the work carried out for the improvement and restoration of the natural and ethnological heritage of the coastal strip. These Blue Trails will play an important part in providing the opportunity for residents and visitors to enjoy the rich natural and cultural heritage with the minimum impact to the environment.

They also provide an important recreational and social resource for the benefit of all who use it.

The Blue Trails will come to have the same prestige as the Blue Flags awarded to beaches and marinas, and will require the same level of commitment to retain them.

The Councillor for the Tourism and Environment Departments, Emilio López Berenguer, has stated that his vision for the Manilva Beaches Blue Trail is that it becomes a management to the enhance coastal conservation, knowledge, and recreation for residents and visitors to enjoy the spectacular scenery in such a way that respects the natural environment.

Construction begins on the bridge connecting Casares Costa and Sabinillas

Work has begun on the construction of the footbridge which will span the Rio Manilva and connect the coasts of Casares and Sabinillas.

Following the signing of the necessary documentation by The Mayoresses of Casares and Manilva giving the go ahead for the construction which began on Monday May 19.

The two metre wide wooden footbridge will span the 41 metres over the mouth of the Rio Manilva connecting the promenades of both Marina de Casares and Sabinillas.

The company Vallejo Aplicaciones SL has won the 131,183 euro contract to build the bridge with a completion period of no more than three months.

Biagra bring their musical spectacular to Duquesa Golf

This Saturday 24 May Live Music Spain present the musical spectacular that is ‘Biagra’ who will be performing at the La Duquesa Golf and Country Club from 8 pm.

Biagra are a theatrical rock ensemble who perform a mixture of songs from Bowie to the Stones, complete with Costume changes and a good sprinkling of lunacy backed up by Marcus Myers and other top musicians from the area. An experience not to be missed.

Tickets are just 20 euros per person which includes a glass of cava on arrival, two tapas, and a glass of wine, beer or soft drink from the bar.

Culture Department trip to Ronda and Grazalema

Manilva’s Cultural Department has organised a trip to Ronda and Grazalema on Friday May 30

accompanying the Sabinillas Municipal Choir who have been invited to perform at the Grazalema Romeria in celebration of San Isidro Labrador.

The trip includes a visit to Ronda with free time to explore this historic town and to enjoy lunch at the Hnos Macias Restaurant situated in Ronda’s old town centre.

After lunch it is off to Grazalema to enjoy the traditional Romeria and the choir’s performance during Mass.

The coach leaves Manilva at 10 am from the roundabout at the entrance to the town; and 10.15 am from the bus stop by Supersol in Sabinillas.

Dozens of classic scooters in Manilva last Saturday

On Saturday 10 May dozens of classic scooter owners met up in Sabinillas for the latest of their regular Scooter Rallys, organised by local resident and scooter fan DJ Sabinillas Dancingmood in collaboration with Manilva’s Youth and Foreigners Departments, the heads of which, councillors Marcos Ruiz and Diego Urieta respectively, are both scooter owners.

The scooters met up at the Repsol Garage in Sabinillas before heading out on a run to Casares.

Back in Sabinillas they took lunch at Las Brasas before the run down to Puerto de la Duquesa for a parade around the port and a chance for people to view these classic machines.

The day was rounded off at the Mayfair Music Club where from 8.30 pm it was party time with music from Mod era by various DJs, and a live concert by the band The Fabulous Jungle Jumpers who performed to a packed dancefloor.

International Family Day Party postponed until Sunday 18th

Important Notice: International Family Day postponed until Sunday 18th May due to unfavourable weather forecast.

Manilva’s Foreigners Department is organising the annual International Family Day to be held in Castillo de la Duquesa this Sunday 18 May.

From 12 noon until 8 pm there will be a packed programme of entertainment and activities including Zumba, flamenco, market, children’s games and activities, bouncy castle, facepainting, live music and dance.

This year the event has moved to Plaza Miramar in the centre of Castillo de la Duquesa.
