Manilva’s Parks and Gardens Department is currently carrying out intensive works in the area between the Mercadona roundabout and the Pueblo Mexicano urbanisation to create a recreation area for local residents.
The 10,000 square metre area will boast a park, basketball courts, fitness park, and a dedicated bicycle track, which will form part of a larger network of bike lanes currently in development. A second section will join this with the Villa Matilde park, and links them with the recreation area at Maicandil with its basketball court, and fitness area.
According to the Mayoress, Antonia Muñoz, “The aim is to consolidate and link all these leisure areas in the Sabinillas urban area” she said in a recent visit to the area with her councillor for parks and gardens, Antonio Parra, who stated that this new recreational area should be open for the public to enjoy in the next month or so.
Manilva’s Foreign Residents Department has organised a number of events for the coming months beginning this Saturday with a cultural trip to Cádiz.
Also in the coming weeks there will be the ‘Copa de Manilva’ Golf Tournament, organised in collaboration with the Commerce Department.
On April 23, there will be a celebration of Saint George’s Day with a gala dinner at Hemmingway’s Restaurant in Duquesa Port. There will also be live music and entertainment in front of the Leisure Lounge nearby.
On Saturday May 17 International Day of the Family will be celebrated in the Parque del Huerto park, next to the Castle in Castillo, from 12 noon with a packed programme of music and entertainment along with fun and games for the kids, and a range of stands offering food and drink. This year the event is organised in collaboration with the Afima and Luisana charitable associations.
On May 24 there is a trip to Montillo in Cordoba, including a visit to the Roble and Alvear wine bodegas.
Next up is the Sabi Street Party, taking place on Sunday, June 15 in the square at Punta Almina, and featuring a great line up of local musicians, craft market, and entertainment for the kids from 1 pm. The event is in aid of the Duquesa Charitable Society of Saint George.
On Saturday, 21 June, as the thermometer begins to reach its peak, the department is organising a trip to the Water Park at Algeciras.
Also during June the annual International 7-a-side Football Tournament will be held, with teams representing various nationalities making up Manilva’s cosmopolitan community.
Manilva’s Culture Department are organising a trip to Malaga on Monday, 14 April, to witness some of the city’s spectacular Easter processions.
On the Monday there are a number of processions by various brotherhoods such as those by Cofradías de La Crucifixión y María Santísima en su Soledad, la Cofradía de Ntro. Padre Jesús de la Columna y María Santísima de la O, popularly know as the “Los Gitanos” o El Santísimo Cristo del Perdón y Ntra. Señora de los Dolores, known by the people of Malaga as “Los Dolores del Puente”. These processions are complemented by the Cofradía de “La Pasión”, con la del Cristo Coronado de Espinas y Ntra. Señora de Gracia y Esperanza “Estudiantes” and one of the largest and most emblematic processions the Ntro. Padre Jesús Cautivo, que junto a María Santísima de la Trinidad which visits all corners of the City.
The coach leaves at 6 pm from the roundabout at the entrance to Manilva town, picking up from the bus stop opposite the petrol station in Sabinillas. The coach returns at around 1 am.
Tickets are just 7 euros and are available from the Culture Department in Plaza Martin Carpena, next to the football ground in Manilva, or from the Fiestas Department in the Edificio Usos Multiples in Sabinillas.
This evening, Wednesday 26 March, from 8 pm, Manilva’s Municipal School of Music will be holding a musical recital by students from the school performing various works on guitar, drums, piano, and vocals.
The event is being held in the theatre at the Manilva Wine Centre (next to the Fire Station) in Manilva Town.
The performances are in three parts, beginning with their interpretation of a Ronda Infantil, el Vals Rosa, Pirates of the Caribbean, Para Elisa y Campanitas, and more.
The second part features ‘Stand By Me’, ‘The Godfather, and Beethoven’s 2nd Sonata.
Third and final part features ‘Hijo de la Luna’, ‘Milonga del Ángel’ and various Bulerías.
The public are welcome to attend and the bar will open for drinks and refreshments.
Local ceramic artist, Conchi Ferrer and her team at the Manilva Ceramics Workshop, are currently working on a new public piece which will adorn the wall of the infant school (opposite Burger King) at the start of the new stretch of Paseo Maritimo currently under construction in Sabinillas.
Measuring some 20 metres by 7 metres, and comprising over 2,500 tiles, the piece is based on the painting ‘Neptune’s Horses’ by English artist and book illustrator Walter Crane.

The first Manilva Arts and Crafts Group Easter Fair will be held at Villa Matilde, Sabinillas from 11 am to 6 pm on Saturday April 19.
There will be a wide range of handmade arts and crafts items for sale along with face painting, bouncy castle, apple bobbing, play park, etc., for the children, along with an Easter egg hunt for the under-8s.
There will also be cakes and pastries, a selection of international foods, as well as wine tasting.
The Luisana Association for the disabled will be presenting children’s games and the Fybromyalgia Association will be offering refreshments for sale.

Chris was and will remain in our hearts as one of a kind and will always be remembered for his Massive Heart, Generosity, Loyalty, Cheeky and Loving Nature. His ability to make people laugh was truly outstanding, he never failed to lift everyone’s spirits.
There is a hole in the heart of Sabinillas without him but we will always remember him with a smile and a chuckle. Whenever we come together we will forever keep him alive in the sharing of our memories. Keep them entertained up there my love in your very own unique style.

The project to connect the Sabinillas and La Colonia sections of promenade is expected to be completed in around a month to a month and a half.
As part of the works the children’s playground at La Colonia is being altered and therefore will be temporarily closed. During this closure all of the equipment will be refurbished ready for the playground’s reopening.
Three young climbers from Manilva’s climbing club have been selected by the Andalucia Climbing federation to form part of the regional team in forthcoming competitions.
Alejandro Santaella and Aarón Sabio, Andalucian champions in the categories ‘Dificultad’ and ‘Bloque’ for the past four years and Cristobal Pineda, third overall in ‘Dificultad’ and fourth in ‘Bloque’ categories.
These three promising youngsters are members of Manilva’s municipal climbing school, under the expert direction of Rogelio Pascual, one of Andalucia’s top climbers.
According to Rogelio “they have been selected not just for the physical and technical skills but also because the have the attitude and commitment sought by the Federation’s technical centre, which gives them all the requirements to succeed in the sport of climbing”.
The three young climbers will compete in the Andalucian Championships to be held over four legs in Tomares (Sevilla), Armilla (Granada), Motril (Granada) with the final leg yet to be confirmed, the will also compete in the Malaga Cup, the first round of which will be staged in Manilva on April 26.
Finally the Spanish Championships will give them the opportunity to demonstrate their skills with rounds in Zaragoza, Lleida and Barcelona from April to June.
